Sports Career Graph of Bobby V
Robert John “Bobby” Valentine or Bobby V has enjoyed an illustrious career as a professional baseball player and manager. Apart from running his immensely successful sports bar and restaurant in Stamford, CT, he is still associated with sports in several ways. He also currently serves as the athletic director at Sacred Heart University. Bobby V played for the LA Dodgers in 1969 and from 1971 to 1972, and continued his sports journey as a player for California Angels, New York Mets, and Seattle Mariners during the rest of the 1970s.
From 1985 to 1992, he served as the manager for the Texas Rangers and for the New York Mets from 1996 to 2002. He managed the Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball in 1995 and from 2004 to 2009, and Boston Red Sox in 2012. The latter was not a good mix, did not start off well, and for whatever reason did not have a positive ending.
He also served as an analyst for ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. CBSSports.com hired Bobby V in early 2013 to represent its Fantasy Sports business. This included running a unique viral marketing campaign that gave his fans a chance to “Hire or Fire Bobby V.” He made his MLB Network debut on July 24, 2013, when he filled in for Harold Reynolds on the network’s series MLB Now.
Debut with LA Dodgers
Bobby V debuted with the LA Dodgers as a September call-up in 1969 when he was barely 19 years old. This debut was preceded by his winning of the Pioneer League’s MVP award with the Ogden Dodgers in 1968. He made the Dodgers out of Spring training in 1971, and batted .249 with one home run and 25 runs batted in. He followed it up by playing 119 games the next season and played in several different positions. His batting average improved to .274 in 1972.
In 1974, Valentine made 414 plate appearances in the utility role with California Angels. This was the second most number of appearances of his career, and he batted .261 with three home runs. At the end of the 1975 season, he was traded to the San Diego Padres.
Valentine’s role with the Mets was limited, and he was released in Spring training, 1979. He signed with the Seattle Mariners shortly afterwards. He made a debut that season as a catcher. Following the season, at the age of 29 years, he retired from baseball as a professional player.
Career as a Manager
Bobby V was serving as third base coach for the Mets when he was tapped by the Texas Rangers to take over managing duties in the 1985 season. The following season the Rangers finished second in the American League West with a record of 87–75. Valentine also finished second for AL Manager of the Year that year.
Bobby V was the manager for the the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate, the Norfolk Tides, in 1994. Bobby led the Tides to a 67-75 record, which was good for fourth in the five-team West Division of the International League.
Chiba Lotte Marines
Bobby V began his first stint as Chiba Lotte Marines manager in 1995 in the Japanese Pacific League. The team finished in the second place that season, which was an exceptional achievement for the Maries who had not won the Japanese Pacific League pennant for the last 20 years.
New York Mets
Bobby came back to the U.S. and the Norfolk Tides in 1996, managing them to an 82–59 record and second place in the International League’s West Division. He then received a promotion as a manager of the Mets. The resurgence of the Mets began over the next two seasons, with Bobby at the helm of affairs.
Bobby V was named athletic director at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT on February 22nd, 2013. He continues to chart the path of growth in his eventful career as sportsman and manager, in addition to running his unique sports bar and restaurant in Stamford, CT.Posted in In the News | Leave a comment October 9, 2013
